One way to maintain network performance and security is to deploy an external bypass switch. CloudScape developed external Ethernet Bypass is a device that acts as a fail-safe access network port for inline security tools, such as web application firewall (WAF), intrusion prevention system (IPS), and advanced threat protection (APT) solutions.
The Ethernet Bypass sends regular heartbeat to the in-line security appliance, which returns the heartbeat to the Ethernet Bypass, indicating that the security appliance is functioning. However, if the heartbeat is not returned to the Ethernet Bypass indicates that the in-line security appliance is not functioning, the Ethernet Bypass automatically bypasses the appliance, ensuring that packets continue flowing optimally even during times of high traffic.
Besides a power failure, any failure of the appliance hardware or software also closes the relay. When the appliance is restarted, the bypass relay remains closed until the appliance is fully initialized, maintaining network continuity always. This feature is automatic and requires no user configuration.
